Description of the
Leagues
The Corpus Christi Summer Swim League
–
The
League is typically made up of teams from Alice, Tuloso-Midway,
Portland, Calallen, Club Estates, Ingleside, Collier, Kingsville,
Rockport, Odem, Flour Bluff, and many more. For competition
these teams are divided into groups based on size. Dual meets
(club vs. club competitions) are held throughout the season so that
each team will have a chance to compete against the members of its
group.
Following the completion of the dual meets the
City of Corpus Christi will hold a City Championship Meet. All
swimmers who achieve the qualifying times will be allowed to
compete in the championship meet.
TAAF – Texas Amateur Athletic
Federation
(The
parent organization of the Corpus Christi Summer League) TAAF
is a state-wide recreational athletic association; competitions
take place at the Regional and the State Level (for those that
qualify). These optional meets will require the athlete to
travel outside the Corpus Christi Area.
USA Swimming – The National Governing Body for
Swimming
Watercat members will be eligible to compete in
sanctioned USA Meets this summer. These meets will take place
in 50m (referred to as “Long Course”) pools and are a
great opportunity for interested athletes to experience the
“Bigger Swimming World”.

Swimmers will be divided into four (4) practice
groups depending on age and ability level.
Beginner – These swimmers, posses little or no
experience, will focus on learning the basics of all four
competitive strokes, while becoming comfortable in the water and
finding a love for the sport. Practices will last 30
minutes.
Group 1 – These swimmers, who possess some
competitive experience, will focus on mastering the mechanics of
their strokes, turns, and starts while having lots of fun.
Swimmers should be able to swim 50 yards of continuous
Freestyle and Backstroke, as well as be familiar with the Butterfly
and Breaststroke. Practices will last 45 minutes.
Group 2 – This Intermediate group will be composed
of swimmers who need a little more “training” but are
still focused on skill development. Swimmers should be able to
swim 50 yards of all four competitive strokes, dive and be familiar
with competitive racing turns. Practices will last 1
hour.
Group 3 – This group will be composed of the more
advanced swimmers who are capable of training continuously for over
an hour and a half. Their training will consist of everything
from the most basic to the most challenging aspects of
swimming. Practices will last 60-75 minutes or
more.
*Practices are held at the Portland Aquatic
Center & the CCISD / Corpus Christi Natatorium
**Swimmers/Parents are responsible for initial
placement into training groups. This will be done during
registration. Adjustment to groups will be made by the coaches
as needed.
The
Watercats will participate in at least four (4) dual meets during
the swim season (one will be in Portland). The meets are
typically held on Saturdays and run from 8:00am until around
noon. All swimmers are highly encouraged to attend the meets
and while participation is recommended, it is not
required. For meets, swimmers will be separated by sex
and divided into groups based on age. Those groups
are:
6&Under
7-8
9-10
11-12
13-14
15&Over
Open
The
Duel meet schedule has not been published yet, but should be out in
early May. For those of you who are looking to make summer
plans, here is the summer calendar:
-
Swimmers must participate in two (2) of the dual meets to be
eligible for the City Championship.
As soon as the final schedule is received it will
be distributed to all team members.
Summer league swim teams thrive on volunteer
help. As the season progresses coaches and board members may
seek help from team member’s parents. We ask that anyone
who is available please help out. This is especially true when
hosting and participating in meets. The more volunteers
we have, the quicker and easier things will run. There are a
variety of jobs to suit everyone’s tastes and interests so
don’t be afraid if you are new to swimming.
If
you are interested in getting involved with the team please talk to
the coach or any of the board members.
“Team-Oriented” or
“Social” events will be planned throughout the season
as a way for the swimmers and families to have fun and get to know
each other. The Watercats know that swimming is a team
sport and that in the end, swimming is about having
fun.
Lets
great ready for a great summer!
